Negombo, the most convenient Transit Point with a Beach
Negombo is a typical fishing town situated close to the International Airport and it is an ideal place for those who want quick access to and from the airport. Added to the location, the long sandy beach strip and the availability of decent hotels and restaurants to suit all budgets has made Negombo a popular tourist destination.
Catamarans and huge imposing churches are the backdrop of Negombo scenery. The majority of the community here is Roman Catholic by faith. Apart from the well attended Sunday Mass, Easter & Christmas, the feasts dedicated to various saints, which they conduct annually, are also held in a grand scale.
One of the best attractions here is the Fishing Village, which comes alive in the morning hours when the fishermen bring in their daily catch and do trading. This is an ideal place to see many varieties of sea fish.
Once, this modest beach town had been a trading port for Portugese and Dutch. The old Dutch fort gate built in 1672 which is now a part of the prison, and the Dutch Canal which was then a supply route to the Dutch administration and old churches are some the other attractions in Negombo.
